Denali Highway Alaska

Denali Highway: from Richardson Highway to before Paxon Milepost 0 road closed for season , no winter maintenance provided - scheduled reopening for 12:00 AM, 05/15/06

Denali Highway - Overview - Route 8, This 136 mile mostly gravel road connects the midpoints of the Parks highway at Cantwell with the Richardson highway near Paxon, passing stunning alpine vistas high in the Alaska Range that rival those within Denali National Park itself. Along this road you will find a magnificent network of trails and mountain lakes and a good chance to see wolves, caribou, grizzly bear, moose, and many types of waterfowl.

The denali highway from cantwell to paxson alaska.

The Denali Highway, covering 136 miles is one of the few reminiscences of the Alaska I remember and still portrays the nostalgic lifestyle of days gone past. Here you can find the rugged solitude that once was the norm along the country roads of this frontier state. You can stop by a family owned roadhouse run by real Alaskans striving to live a lifestyle that is disappearing all to fast. As the outside corporations continue to build massive resorts in once primitive, rugged and serene environments, for now this windy, rugged dirt road stands as a testament to a lifestyle that is doomed to extinction as the state continues to sell itself out to these giant outside corporations that are devouring this land. If your looking for a Walmart parking lot to park your RV in for the night, this road is not for you. If adventure and a glimpse into the richness of Alaska’s past is what you seek, don't pass up on the Denali highway as you will be missing out on one of the few remaining unspoiled highways open to travel in this great state we call home.

We will begin this journey at milepost 185 of the richardson highway near the town of Paxon. (See page 106, grid D-3, of your Alaska Atlas and Gazetteer) Due to the detail of the maps in the Gazetteer, we will refer to this book often throughout this website.
