Route 1 from Tok to Gakona, 125 miles, Gakona to Glennallen, 15 miles, and Glennallen to Anchorage, 189 miles. From the Alaska Highway, this is how you get to Southcentral Alaska, including Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. From Tok to Glennallen is referred to as the Tok Cut-Off and borders the wilderness area of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This area consists of spectacular mountains that flow into wide open tundra, meandering streams and numerous smaller lakes and ponds. From the town of Glennallen on to the major city of Anchorage, this scenery gets even more spectacular, as the road passes through high alpine terrain, glacial carved valleys and then down along the Matanuska Glacier, where it winds through a deep canyon valley carved by the glacier fed Matanuska river and its tributaries.
